And so the Angel said to the Whirligig, “I don’t understand. Why are you so
angry with the Tanks? We sent them to protect you while you taught the world about magic.”
HOW
DID THE FIGHTING START?
hirligigs and Tanks are excellent at triggering each other’s anger. The anger
is generally related to a fear. If you want to understand Whirligigs and Tanks and the
complicated relationships that evolve between the two personalities, you will want to understand
what makes them afraid. If either a Whirligig or Tank becomes afraid, they react intensely and
will often create a lot of damage before the dust settles.
A Whirligig has one fear. The biggest fear for the Whirligig is of being
hemmed in or trapped. Whirligigs are often ahead of their time, and frequently have visions of
themselves beyond their maturity level. A Whirligig does not believe in paying dues. If a
Whirligig believes that he or she is ready for a specific assignment or task, he or she will see
no point in allowing the grey hairs to form or the years to accumulate.
A Tank is wise to never attempt to capture or control the Gig. The Tank is
also exhibiting intelligence by never suggesting that the Whirligig is incapable of
accomplishing any “hair-brained” idea. Any indication on the Tank’s part that the Whirligig does
not know or understand the implications of a plan will lead to an “in your face” exhibition of
how wrong the Tank is. Those exhibitions can be costly to both Tanks and
Whirligigs.
The Whirligig can and does respond to dares. Comparatively, he or she is a bit
reactive to statements or behaviors that indicate skepticism of a Whirligig’s intention. Above
all, the Whirligig wants to be taken seriously and is quite sensitive to slights. The Tank, on
the other hand, will often go out of his or her way to insult the Gig’s ideas as incomplete,
impractical, or even stupid. Each of these responses will make the Whirligig feel as if the Tank
is using useless, biased responses to keep the Gig from moving forward.
The Tank’s fear, on the other hand, is of being out of control. The free-fall
that the Whirligig is so comfortable with and actually seeks is the Tank’s nightmare. The Tank
genuinely wants to know that actions have been well thought through, and he or she takes pride
in identifying the potential pitfalls in any plan. The Tank will spot a poorly planned
initiative long before the Whirligig is finished talking.
